Antique Karabagh Prayer Rug
#2505 Karabagh Prayer Rug
2’-11” x 3’-11”
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1900
Caucases
OVERVIEW:
An incredibly well-preserved Karabagh prayer rug with simple yet elegant designs and shimmering full wool pile. Due to their proximity to Persia, Karabagh rugs boast a large design pool that will either pull from the Caucuses or from Persia. Given the earthy tones of this particular piece, it would seem the weaver chose the former as their inspiration. The reds lean more coral and the whites lean more cream giving this piece a softness to the eyes.
The pile is also full and long, an indicator of its origins as many parts of the Karabagh region are nestled into the colder mountainous areas of modern day southern Azerbaijan and Eastern Armenia.
Simple and to the point in its design, with a clear purpose of use in worship, this Karabagh prayer rug is in near-flawless condition and has a long life ahead of it in use or is equally viable to someone perhaps starting to collect antique Caucasian rugs.
CONDITION:
Slight selvedge fraying
