Rug Care 101
How often should I clean my oriental rug?
Oriental rugs can be vacuumed by the owner, but using a ‘suck-only’ function rather than a brush that may be abrasive to the fibers. Depending on where a rug is and how much traffic it gets will determine how often to to clean the rug. Serious offsite cleaning by a professional depends on how and where the rug is being used.
What areas of the house require more consistent cleaning?
A formal living room rug can easily go ten years between cleaning. Dining room rugs are much the same as their use, although counterintuitive, is much less than we might imagine. A hallway runner may need cleaning every 3-5 years, and if a traffic pattern is detected on a rug, it’s important to rotate the rug once a year to ensure a more even wear.
I spilled something on my rug, what now?
Spills should be gently blotted using a clean paper towel or cloth and done immediately after spilling. DO NOT let water or other liquids (urine especially) set into the rug. If done for a prolonged period of time the foundation will deteriorate eventually causing irreversible damage, such as dry-rot.
Always use a rug pad
A well-fitted rug pad (~1” smaller than the rug on every side) will prolong the life of your rug, make it stay in place, and create a comfortable extra cushion to make the area of the rug more plush, warm, and easier to sit on.
