Antique Fereghan Sarouk Rug

$850.00

#2501 Fereghan Sarouk Rug
4’-2 × 6’-6”

AGE & ORIGIN:
4th Q. 19th C.
Persia

OVERVIEW:
Fereghan rugs present some of the most familiar and quintessential Persian designs that are still being copied to this day. These rugs are arguably what made Oriental rugs popular in Europe towards the latter half of the 19th century, as it was the rugs from Fereghan that were presented at the Vienna Exhibition in 1873 which accelerated the European hunger for Persian and Oriental rugs. This event started a chain reaction that affected the American market as well, and from then on, rug production was in almost a gold-rush stage which ended up placing these older, 19th C. Fereghans in the homes of the European and American aristocracy.

These rugs are elegant and sophisticated, not only in their design, but in their theory of color use as well. There’s an imperfect, kaleidoscopic nature to these rugs that holds the viewers’ attention. The deep reds, blackish blues and sandy gold blot out onto the rug like different colored oils layered on top of each other.

CONDITION:
Evenly worn with minor exposed foundation. Partial loss of outer guard border on one end and complete loss of on other end. Restored selvedges.
