Antique Afshar Rug
#2511 Antique Afshar Rug
4’-2” x 5’-7”
AGE & ORIGIN:
Late 19th C.
Southwest Persia
OVERVIEW:
An absolutely incredibly well-preserved and stunning Afshar rug. We can begin with the colors. From the apricot, royal blue, spring red, teal green, ivory, among others, all compliment each other exceptionally and have aged like wine, being all vegetal. The Afshar, a Turkic group originally from central Asia, were rooted in the Caucuses, eventually being relocated to Southwest Persia by one of the Shah’s, carried their ancient design language with them. As such, we see many ‘caucuasian’ designs on Afshar rugs, despite being based in Persia.
Notably here, we see the ‘endless knot’ motif in the center of the two main medallions, taking on an almost cloud-like shape. The many latchhook borders enclosing the field medallions as well as the simple star shapes across the field are all reminiscent of the Caucases.
CONDITION:
Even wear
