Antique Afshar Dragon-Phoenix Rug

$775.00

#2502 Dragon-Phoenix Afshar
4’-2” x 5’-9”

AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1900
Persia

OVERVIEW:
The Afshar are a group now located in Southeast Persia, but in antiquity were based in the Caucuses. As such, much of their design language stems from this region, including the one seen here.

This Afshar displays the dragon-phoenix motif, a design originally thought to have hailed from China. When looking at earlier art from China of the Dragon-Phoenix, the design is much more overt and obvious, but versions of it that reached and were used in design in areas of central Asia and the Caucuses are much more abstracted.
This piece displays the dragon more prominently than other pieces that typically have the two motifs in similar rows, but in alternating fashion. The Phoenix here has been relegated to the four corners of the rug.

This is a delicate piece, best used perhaps in an office or other low-traffic space.

CONDITION:
Worn, areas of major repair, small slit
